Transitioning from traditional to digital

SHARE THIS: twitter facebook delicious digg reddit stumbleupon myspace

Turntablism isn’t dead but it is becoming more and more niche as time passes by. While those of us who learned to DJ with vinyl have a full set of skills and talents, making the move to the world of digital DJing can seem intimidating. One of the most popular questions we are asked here at DJ Store is how to make the move from traditional to a more modern digital setup.

The first thing you need to decide is how attached you are to the traditional ‘two turntables/CD players and a mixer’ setup. This is a large determining factor in what type of product you should look at first. If you really don’t want to lose your 1210s then the first thing you should look at is a Digital Vinyl System or DVS. A DVS is a package which includes three important parts – software, a soundcard and timecoded CDs/vinyl. Firstly, you install the software and connect your turntables, mixer and computer to the soundcard. The timecoded CDs/vinyl then send a signal to the soundcard which in turn sends a signal to the computer. Effectively you use your current CD players or turntables and mixer to control your music in the included software.

There are some huge advantages to this system, not least of which is that once you have the DVS set up, everything should be very intuitive and obvious for those of you making the move. Also, a DVSĀ  will work with any normal DJ setup in any bar or club. You just need to take your laptop and soundcard and you can play virtually anywhere. The most popular DVS are Serato Scratch and Traktor Scratch Pro.
