Top 5 iPhone Apps for DJs
Apple’s iPhone has now become one of the most popular little gadgets out there. As time goes by, we are seeing apps released for the system aimed at DJs. In no particular order, these are our top 5;
Quixpin DJ is unique in that it provides a proper DJing experience to the iPhone with two turntables and a mixer. It even gives you full EQ controls and kills. There are a few niggly issues such as having to convert your music into MP2 format before being able to use it but this doesn’t ruin a great user interface with all the controls you would expect. Also, if you pick up a Y splitter and mono mini jacks you can have headphone cue and master output as long as you accept it will all be in mono (which MP2s are anyway).

For all you budding producers out there, there’s Groovemaker. Groovemaker is portable production software which allows you to make your own tracks on the move and even comes with a massive sample suite included. Everything happens in real time with full track sequencing as easy and drag and drop. Sure, this isn’t going to be competing with Ableton any time soon but this is as close as you are getting in your pocket. You’ll find four Groovemaker apps available: free, club, house, and hip-hop, with four more apps coming soon.

iTM DJ is a very clever little piece of software which turns your iPhone into a MIDI controller. Once you download a small piece of free software onto your Mac or PC, you can use your iPhone to control faders, gain knobs, EQs and loads of other stuff on DJing software such as Traktor and Serato.

If you don’t have the money for an Akai MPC but still want to be dropping samples into your set, Virtualdeck is the answer for you. This software mimics a turntable and allows you to fast-foward, fast-rewind, beat mix, scratch and tune an audio sample. And thankfully, it supports pretty much every music format out there.

Have you ever been caught short needing a beat counter with none anywhere near? Beats is the perfect solution with a nice big tap tempo button which intelligently hones in on the correct BPM of the song you are playing the longer you tap. It also comes with a mixing aid specifically designed for keying records.
