Serato Scratch Live is the latest software and hardware solution for bridging the world of turntablism and the digital world of computer audio files. Using your decks or CD players to control the tunes on a computer you can scratch and mix files from your Mac or Windows XP computer's CD or hard drive, add in a live microphone for scratching, and even bypass to standard vinyl if you wish.

How does it work?

Serato Scratch works almost identically to Final Scratch. The software runs on either PC or Mac and compromises two virtual turntables. These turntables are controlled using Serato’s exclusive control signal from either vinyl or CD. This signal tells the software exactly where the needle is on the record, how fast it is going and the direction of play. The software is so accurate that even the fastest of scratches is perfectly reproduced.

What you get ?

The package consists of a Mac/PC installation CD containing all the relative files to get you up and running, and the Serato Scratch Live application. There are two vinyl records and two CDs encoded with the control signal. The USB interface is the only other piece of hardware. It connects the standard vinyl or CD turntables to your computer, and comes with a USB cable and four phono leads to link it all up.

The hardware

The Serato Scratch Live hardware interface is designed and produced by Rane, the highly respected US manufacturer. The custom USB is designed purely to work with the software ensuring the best compatibility. The high quality, bus-powered USB audio device features two switchable phono or line inputs, a microphone input, two line outputs, and pass thru outputs. These outputs replicate the input signal and allows DJs to switch between Serato Scratch Live and normal sources. Power must be connected for this thru channel to work. The Mic input is used for recording directly into the software and a thru output on a large jack connector. There is a volume control for the microphone to allow adjustment for recording.

Installation

Installation is incredibly easy. Simply put the CD into the drive and run the set-up program. On a Mac, once the software is installed the interface can be plugged in and it all works straight away. On the PC the installation is very similar and straightforward, but you also need to install a few drivers once the interface has been connected. No reboot is necessary and the program loads in a few minutes. With the interface installed and plugged into a USB port, and your decks and mixer connected, simply launch the software by clicking on the icon on your desktop and the system is ready to go.

Configuration

Various options can be customised on Serato Scratch. The control signal and parameters can be adjusted for the best possible performance. There is a switch allowing you to select between CD line level and phono inputs. You can select the scope view to show the strength and stereo shape of the input signal. Another feature is the threshold of vinyl mode that prevents background noise from controlling the audio playback. There is also a USB audio buffer controller to optimise the system. Serato Scratch Live sounds incredibly realistic to vinyl and seems perfectly accurate and sound realistic.

Layout

The screen is laid out with two player areas on top, on either side displays track waveform and beat matching visual aids; above the players are clear details of artist and track names along with the total track length. At the bottom left of the screen is a navigator for switching between library views including CD tracks, and all tracks in the library. The right hand side panel is filled with the containing tracks and allows users to customize and display tag information.

File Management

Importing tracks into your library is simple and easy. Dropping a folder into the record crate view creates a new crate containing the files in that folder. Importing tracks stores a reference in the library to the location. Finding your way around the library is easy and the information displayed is instantly customisable and easily sorted. File tag information can be edited directly on screen. Files can also be searched to find a match. Tracks are loaded by dragging and dropping or with shortcut keys. There’s also a track on the record and CDs which when played scrolls through the library. As soon as the needle or CD is put on control signal again playback will start.

Waveform View

The Serato system has four different waveform displays. The horizontal one at the top helps the user to match the tempos of the two tracks. It displays peaks of the beats for each track and shows the beat timing according to the spacing between the peaks. The left deck is represented by orange peaks and the right deck by blue peaks. Scratch Live draws a draws a waveform of the whole track on the outer edge as it is played. The middle waveform is works with the current position of the track and the different frequencies are represented by different colours. The centre strip offers another beat matching tool as it shows the very start of the beats as lines and when in time run directly alongside each other.

Playback

Scratch Live has three different playback modes. It can play music regardless of the position of the needle on the record (relative mode), or according to the exact position of the needle/laser (absolute mode). There is also internal mode which Serato Scratch Live automatically changes to when the record reaches the end. The pitch can be adjusted and fine tuned by holding down the shift key. It’s not easy to mix when in internal mode as you cannot pitch bend or cue start.

Other Features

Cue points can be recorded using visual markers to help find the right spot in a tune. This is unique to Serato Scratch Live and helps DJs organise and arrange their sets. Another great feature is that Serato Scratch Live can record directly from a microphone from the main interface, these recordings can then be saved for future use or can be instantly loaded to a deck for scratching.

Conclusion

Serato Scratch Live has taken on board previous and current system problems and created an integrated product that delivers functionality with intuitive design. In our opinion Serato Scratch comes as the most highly regarded system of its kind where stability has not been sacrificed over functionality. It has incredibly realistic vinyl reproduction and offers simple and effective features. Now you can create your own music, or purchase and download a track online, and play it on your decks instantly.

You'll wonder how you lived without it
By: James Richardson

You probably already know what Rane Serato Scratch Live is and does. The mad thing is that it works, and really really well. Even with a pretty old, low spec ibook, it performs perfectly after a very quick and easy set up. I cant speak about any of the competitor products as I have not tried anything else, however I would fully recommend the Serato for its stability and simplicity. I had ummd and arrd about getting this for a while, now I really cant see how I have lasted so long without. It will both save a fortune on increasing expensive vinyl and also stop to search for tunes I had on CD in vinyl. Great next day service from DJ Store. 2007-08-28

Fantastic! A Must Buy!
By: Paul Francombe

Have just received this product today - again top marks DJ Store, totally reliable delivery, i know it will be on my door the next day.

I have never tried Final Scratch so i can't compare it to that, however i can tell you now, this is as close to vinyl as you can get! No lag whatsoever, so simple to load tracks (drag and drop), also the fact your decks are doing the work makes beatmatching easy.

One thing i have noticed already is that try to get the highest quality tracks you can on this baby. It can only output the sound it has on the files so if you've got muddy 96k rips, it will stand out next to a 320k file on deck 2.

Setup was easy enough, took under 10 minutes, and i was away. This is the first time i've ever used this product, so i can safely say, out of the box, it's all there and doesn't take long!

I am now considering only using the serato system! As crazy as it sounds i think my vinyls will be gathering dust from now on.

Don't forget guys, keep it legal, don't fileshare! 2006-03-27

Insane
By: P J

Basically, yep, im gonna say it, i was gettin bored with vinyl. Well not bored with vinyl itself, but bored with the price. It really started to grate me having to pay 8 quid for a vinyl - im all for supporting the industry but 8 quid makes it hard for us geezers who are not on top wedge. I have a load of tunes on mp3 and was considering CD MP3 decks (ugh) until i came across this little guy. Oh man am i happy i did. I read the reviews between this and the stanton and it seemed like a no brainer. So I checked the tech specs, professional reviews etc and i ordered the serato accordingly.

Super prompt delivery from DJStore and i had the serato the next day. Setting it up was a piece of piss and the software was installed easily (get the most recent version from their website). I calibrated my decks (TT200s) with no problems and within minutes was spinning some class tunes... AT NO COST :-)

This thing really is insane, it never loses tracking, plays every mp3 perfectly, im actually a bit shocked at how well it works. I would recommend gettin some decent needles to play with it, Concorde Pro S will do (plays perfectly) as standard stuff kind of ruins the experience a bit, trust me, i tried! Also before you try your first track, clean the vinyl spotless with a duster for maximum effect.

The features with the serato is ridiculous, you can actually enqueue tracks without touchin the laptop via a special area on the A side of the vinyl! It shows waveforms, beat patterns, bpm – everything you need for that perfect mix.

On whole this is a spankingly good product and at under 500 bar its the best thing OD404 – Robot Jam (BK Remix) ;-)

Keep on raving! 2006-01-20
Serato or Final Scratch 2 you ask?... SERATO all the way! This thing is incredible.
By: Hix

I'm in the privileged position to have owned both Final Scratch 2 and Serato.

I used FS2 extensively for the last 6 months, 2-3 times a week in clubs.

After seeing Cash Money use Serato right next to me at a gig, I decided to make the switch.

Sold my FS2 and got SERATO and it's the best damn decision i've made. This thing is incredible. It just moves and feels sooooo much better than FS2. The software is far slicker and the tracks load instantly (unlike the slight, but annoying, delay in FS2). The interface and layout of the songs is cleaner and the circular visual depiction of the track on the screen just makes so much more sense that FS2's horizontal line. Oh, and for the turntablists out there, you can mark the tracks and they appear as long bold lines on the visual record, just like you would mark a real record!

Perhaps FS2 would suit house DJs, but if you're a HipHop/RnB dj like myself, there is absolutely NO COMPETITION!

Trust me, this thing is incredible.

And buy it from these guys too. DJ Store were very helpful and very quick. I ordered it at 3.30pm on the monday and i received it the very next morning.

First class service, and a fist class product. Can't recommend it enough. 2006-01-16
Trust me i'm a dj...
By: dkmanchester

this is, how shall i put it... the nuts. Just have to find a dustbin for my FS2 and stick my finger up to their technical people and I'll be good to go.

Oh, and buy from these guys... i took great care choosing where to buy my serato from - this lot are the most helpful BY A LONG WAY.

Love and luck people. 2005-01-10
Top piece of kit
By: god_is_a_dj

Fantastic product. Your digital music can be faithfully played and manipulated on your turntables/cd decks. Scratches, slow downs, the lot - sounds like real vinyl. Also check out the serato forum, great community and great support. The software is very reliable and updates are free. The hardware is solidly built.

Ive not owned Final Scratch personally but i done my research before buying SSL or FS and it seems Final Scratch is prone to a lot of problems. Scratch Live seems to beat it hands down.

Highly recommended. 2004-11-01
my girlfriends getting lonely
By: DJ Arkham

well what can i say this is amazing....love it to bits. there no delay you really do forget that their MP3`s and for scratching it up there amazing. i work as a dj in a band so to be able to cut and mix our own beats takes our music to a whole new level.
i been taking films then grabbing samples out of them as wav or mp3 then layering them on my deck to scratch with.....its soooooooo much fun. 2004-10-06
No expensive dublates
By: DJ Shift

Serato delivers. I was actually going to get Final Scratch but heard rumblings of Serato on a few forums. The RRP put me off at first at over £600 but DJ Store came in at just over £400 which persuaded the purchase.
So far this product has not disappointed. Although the standard 1.0 version only plays mp3 the output quality and latency is superb.
10 minutes of skimming the manual and a strightforward set up and I was spinning my first mp3.
The needle drop to mp3 is instant and the scratching is responsive. Being a turntablist, I loved the labels that you can "stick" on to the screen turntables to mark that all important cut or scratch.
Being a vinyl junkie this gives me the best of both the digital and anolgue worlds. At the flick of the line/phono mixer switch you can simply play your existing vinyl. Switch it back and finally get to play out those cheeky bootlegs you've done in your bedroom or see the crowd react to your latest tune.
the fact that it is backed by the Rane stable only adds to the feeling of a quality piece of kit.
Thoroughly recommend this product and with DJ Store's excellent service and competitive pricing you won't go wrong 2004-08-12
Steals Stanton's lunch money and kicks its football over the fence
By: Hex

If you're looking at this product i'd imagine you'll also be looking at stanton's final scratch and trying to weigh up which to buy. Unless you are clinically insane, buy this.

The hardware is robust and well designed, the software innovative, well programmed and stable, and best of all the customer support from rane/serato is second to none. As a former final scratch user who sold it to buy ssl, beleive me that this is a far superior product.

Unlike fs, control of mp3's really is just like using normal vinyl. With fs fast backspinning, beat juggling and scratching is not possible as the audio breaks up, but ssl has no such difficulty. Also unlike fs the sound quality is far superior with no digital artifacts, glitching or drop outs. The software is next to un-crashable and is free from the huge number of stability and incompatibility problems that plague final scratch.

countless disgruntled final scratch users are now moving over to ssl due to stanton's appauling lack of support for their fundamentally flawed product, and i strongly suggest that you do not fall into the same trap by investing in serato scratch live instead. 2004-07-23

Serato scratch live review

rane serato pros
1. Every cd, or digital track you have magically becomes wax and guess what, santa brought doubles of everything.

2. Limitless options for sampling your own music; voice overs.

3. The vertical view of the wave form is an outstanding tool for any dj to perfect beat matching & scratching.

4. Space saving square hard ware compared to competitors awkward round hard ware.

5. Relative mode allows conservation of the serato vinyl because you can practice the same cut anywhere on the record.
